Each signature of pages is attached directly to the cover by sewing through the leather. The result is a decorative stitch pattern on the spine. They loved both the elegance of the book and how easy it was to make, and asked if she could create something similar but make it specifically for photographs. Although photographs were the original inspiration, it turns out that the new structure also works well for layered collage and other inclusions. Kristen streamlined the whole process by developing an easier way to add spacers, which allows for the extra bulk between pages. In addition, the pages themselves are made of heavier paper that doesn’t “flop” when the book is opened. Choose either ribbon or waxed linen thread for the binding.

The result is a beautiful album that accommodates added materials, whether photographs, layers of collage, or other keepsakes. For a simple but striking variation, use two different colors of waxed linen thread. It’s hard to imagine that such beautiful patterns were never meant to be seen! These formerly hidden bindings were created around the eighth century; it was a time when books became larger and heavier, which required stronger structural support. As a result, hard wearing stitch patterns were used to bind the signatures and were then covered over with a spine to protect them.

In this class, local book artist Kristen Lewis focuses on a stitch pattern she calls “starburst”.
