It’s a two-part class taught by Mia Semingson, co-owner of Two Hands Paperie and an experienced bookbinder who loves sharing her knowledge. You learn by doing – that is, by making a traditional, covered spine book from start to finish with your own two hands. So you can later make more to your exact specifications, Mia also provides information on how to resize the basic structure. Then it’s time to get busy making. It’s a non-adhesive binding with a thick board cover, exposed sewing, and a “window” on the spine. The name comes from the classic buttonhole embroidery stitch, which is the pattern used in the book’s binding to create a distinct, decorative edge.

The sewing pattern is straightforward but yields impressive results. We were particularly taken with variations where the “window” on the spine is cut into different shapes or extended into the covers. What's unusual about it is that it's designed to be made as a text block with a decorative softcover paper slipcase—no glue is used in this binding. Just think of the endless and easy possibilities! You can create this little book (approximately 5.5 x 4.25 inches) with materials already lying around the house, and interestingly, no ruler is required. The big bonus: because the notebook is made without a ruler, it can easily be translated into any size book. Just start with the size of a cover sheet that happens to be available. What a handy technique to add to your toolkit!

For show and tell, Jeff brings in all the materials he would normally use for this class. Some are both surprising and amusing. Because the class is at Two Hands Paperie, though, standard bookbinding materials are used: waxed linen thread, bone folders, and bookbinding needles. Jeff steps you through putting your notebook together. You’ll leave class having learned a Coptic sewing technique as well as a clever way to create a decorative cover. Not bad for a few hours of work.

An email will be sent to participants the Monday before the class.
