Multimedia artist Liza MacKinnon has been creating magic with paper for over fifteen years, and she enjoys doing these mini embroideries as a break from the elaborate paper dresses she constructs. She says the embroidered photos and cards are just plain fun to make and give away. Plus, they’re a very portable project. They’re the blank canvases for your stitching. To provide inspiration, Liza shows plenty of examples and makes suggestions. It’s remarkable how even just a few stitches adds a touch of magic to a photo or card. Before deciding on your design, gain practical experience stitching on paper by working some basic stitches on a cardstock template. Liza talks about composition, color, texture, the art of pre-punching holes for the embroidery – and how to skip the mistakes she originally made along the way! She consults with everyone individually as they plan out their design. Sometimes it’s the simple ones that are the most effective. Then it’s stitch, stitch, stitch while Liza circulates around the class, answering questions. It’s a chance to learn or refine your needle skills from quilter and Mending Club founder Nanci Feeney. For the uninitiated, Sashiko is a mindful Japanese mending craft. The name literally means “little stabs”, and is a visible form of decorative stitching that developed in Japan in the 1600s.

In designing the market bag, Nanci adapted traditional Sashiko patterns. One covers the sturdy straps and the handy little pen pocket attached to the bag, with a second pattern cascading down the front. A single large Sashiko patch, which is layered on the front, sports another pattern. To add some extra pizzaz, Nanci has added a multi-colored ribbon and fabric tassel. It’s fun and quick to make, and she’ll show you how to do it.

Nanci begins class with an introduction to the basics of Sashiko, from a brief history to supplies and various applications.
