The bonus? It enriches the experience a hundredfold. Doing it requires only a blank journal and a few art supplies tucked away in a small case – nothing fancy! And you don’t have to be an “artist”. Just willing to carve out a little time here and there to quietly write, paste, and draw.

Learn this simple approach to travel journaling from Fran Meneley, a veteran traveler and a prolific journaler. Her experience is that journaling helps us step outside of ourselves and makes us more attuned to what’s going on all around us. We notice the smell of a dusty road, how good a coke can taste far away from home, and the expressions on people’s faces while waiting for a train. These small details are the soul of the journey and become precious memories when recorded.

Fran shares with you what she’s learned from years of creating her own travel journals. (How useful!) Sashiko literally means “little stabs”, and is a visible form of decorative stitching that began in the 1600s in Japan. Poor communities, particularly rural ones, lacked the means to buy new textiles, so they repaired clothes and other items with what was available: a needle, some thread, and scraps of fabric. Nanci is delighted to show you just how attractive and ornamental this Japanese art of combining simple stitches and bits of cloth can be.

The class is designed to give you a solid foundation in Sashiko. Copy the provided patterns or use them to inspire your own. It’s easy to change up the look by playing with multiple colors of thread or combining parts of several patterns. It’s a traditional approach that produces higher quality soap than other methods. Selected base oils, scents, natural and/or cosmetic color, and lye are mixed together until they emulsify. (Note: Lisa is all about safety. You don’t handle the lye directly, and she reviews safety tips at the beginning of class.) Everyone works the mixture in order to gain hands-on experience with how thick the slurry should be and how to tell when it’s ready to pour. The fun part of the process is customizing the soap with color and embellishments. Simple techniques, which Lisa demonstrates, elevate the design and give the soap an artistic flair. Dating back centuries, its purpose was to prevent wind from blowing out the flame of a candle. This simple light source morphed into elaborate lanterns that are an integral part of annual festivals all over the world. She’s talking about the art of creating texture by taking a rubbing – that is, placing blank paper over a raised or indented surface and rubbing it gently with a marking agent such as charcoal or chalk. Before you start thinking of kindergarten, know that rubbing is an honest-to-goodness art technique. One is done over “found” texture and the other is done over “created” texture. After describing both, Janet starts the class out working with found textures. Think kitchen strainers, a woven basket, a carved panel, the grain on a piece of wood, and embossed leather book covers. Anything with a hard surface will do. The process couldn’t be simpler or, as Janet points out, more fun. Once you start looking for textures, you’ll start seeing them in unexpected places! “Created” rubbings are made from a simple textured plate, either bought or handmade. Janet makes her own plates from junk mail, postcards, and the cardboard from a cereal or cracker box. So easy! She teaches you how to make your own.

Once you’re familiar with both found and created rubbings, start experimenting.
