The bonus? It enriches the experience a hundredfold. Doing it requires only a blank journal and a few art supplies tucked away in a small case – nothing fancy! And you don’t have to be an “artist”. Just willing to carve out a little time here and there to quietly write, paste, and draw.

Learn this simple approach to travel journaling from Fran Meneley, a veteran traveler and a prolific journaler. Her experience is that journaling helps us step outside of ourselves and makes us more attuned to what’s going on all around us. We notice the smell of a dusty road, how good a coke can taste far away from home, and the expressions on people’s faces while waiting for a train. These small details are the soul of the journey and become precious memories when recorded.

Fran shares with you what she’s learned from years of creating her own travel journals. They loved both the elegance of the book and how easy it was to make, and asked if she could create something similar but make it specifically for photographs. Although photographs were the original inspiration, it turns out that the new structure also works well for layered collage and other inclusions. Kristen streamlined the whole process by developing an easier way to add spacers, which allows for the extra bulk between pages. In addition, the pages themselves are made of heavier paper that doesn’t “flop” when the book is opened. (How useful!) Sashiko literally means “little stabs”, and is a visible form of decorative stitching that began in the 1600s in Japan. Poor communities, particularly rural ones, lacked the means to buy new textiles, so they repaired clothes and other items with what was available: a needle, some thread, and scraps of fabric. Nanci is delighted to show you just how attractive and ornamental this Japanese art of combining simple stitches and bits of cloth can be.

The class is designed to give you a solid foundation in Sashiko. Copy the provided patterns or use them to inspire your own. It’s easy to change up the look by playing with multiple colors of thread or combining parts of several patterns. There’s also a selection of fabrics (denim, canvas, and a linen/cotton blend) from which to choose.

Not all patterns require transferring but, for the ones that do, Nanci demonstrates three different techniques. (Note: Lisa is all about safety. You don’t handle the lye directly, and she reviews safety tips at the beginning of class.) Everyone works the mixture in order to gain hands-on experience with how thick the slurry should be and how to tell when it’s ready to pour. Teresa was inspired to create it by outsider art, that is, art produced by people who have little or no formal training and who work outside mainstream artistic trends. Collage has historically been practiced by women, people of color, and those without access to a formal education – in other words, outsiders – so it seems particularly fitting to offer this class during Februllage. In a nod to Colorado’s state flower, Denver paper artist Finnuala Tessier has chosen to use white and blue for her columbine. The distinctive spurs on the back of the flower head make the flower look tricky, but it’s actually a wonderful project for learning basic crepe paper techniques that translate well into other botanicals.

Finnuala starts class by describing the properties of crepe paper and then explains how this “crepe-ing” lets the paper stretch and be shaped. Since developing muscle memory requires hands-on learning, you'll practice several shaping techniques in the class, e.g., “massaging” the paper, cupping petals, and rolling the edges. In addition, Finnuala shows you how to paint the crepe to achieve the Colorado columbine’s distinctive blue. (Crepe paper is available in a host of colors, but not that one!) It’s all this attention to detail that makes her flowers so life-like.

You'll make one flower in class, then take home materials and templates to make several more at home. She says she’s not a gardener, but she is passionate about making what she calls forever flowers. Her favorite projects, for example, have been capturing in crepe paper a bride’s wedding bouquet as a permanent reminder of that special day. Finnuala finds the challenge of recreating a specific bloom to be the perfect way of decompressing from her day job. Not surprisingly, her travel photos are heavily weighted toward close-ups of the local flora, and her hikes yield pictures from multiple angles of each wildflower she encounters.

European crepe paper is her medium of choice for creating her forever flowers. The crepe is durable, inherently malleable, readily accepts coloring agents, and comes in all the hues of a rainbow. She finds the tactile process of working with it to be meditative. “Every minute I’m making paper flowers, I’m happy”.

Sharing this wonderful art of crepe paper flowers with others is the entire reason why Finnuala started teaching. She believes everyone, no matter their skill level, can learn how to paint, shape, and sculpt crepe paper to create realistic flowers. She meticulously studies a flower and experiments in order to create techniques that bring the flowers to life. For example, she literally tried 18 different paints in various combos - acrylics and watercolors - to match the color of a particular flower. She also made sure the color could easily be duplicated by students.

Her standing invitation to everyone? “Come make forever flowers with me!”

See her Instagram
@flowersbyfinnuala
