Local artist Fran Meneley, who has years of experience putting images together brilliantly, has an approach to the art of collage that’s both intuitive and well-grounded in specific techniques. She starts the class with a few warm up exercises, with everyone receiving the same materials at the beginning of each exercise. The results are eye-opening, instructive, and inspiring. It’s amazing to see how each person’s natural approach produces such a wide variety of small collages.

Additional exercises are fast-paced and keep you working from the right side of your brain. This is the perfect class to sort through and use up your stash of papers – the cards, illustrations, other images, handwritten notes, theater playbills, tickets to special events, even postcards – that you love but don’t know what to do with. We were particularly taken with variations where the “window” on the spine is cut into different shapes or extended into the covers. It’s remarkable how even just a few stitches adds a touch of magic to a photo or card. Before deciding on your design, gain practical experience stitching on paper by working some basic stitches on a cardstock template. Liza talks about composition, color, texture, the art of pre-punching holes for the embroidery – and how to skip the mistakes she originally made along the way! She consults with everyone individually as they plan out their design. Sometimes it’s the simple ones that are the most effective. It’s no surprise, given that the goal of her own art making is to create a beautiful, harmonious, and peaceful environment. Woven throughout her work is a deep love for geometry and pattern. She’s made a lifetime study of art history around the world and has been influenced by works as diverse as ancient manuscripts, medieval architecture, American quilts, Australian aboriginal paintings, Byzantine mosaics, and the decorative traditions of India and the Middle East. Their patterns are a starting point and don’t necessarily result in a predetermined layout. For her, art making is about beginning and then finding out where the piece leads.

True to her personal approach to art, Janet’s classes are fundamentally about exploring and experimenting. Rather than teaching students how to make a particular piece of art, she likes to demonstrate what can be done with a set of materials and then turn students loose to play with them. It’s both astonishing and instructive to see how different the results can be. Classes with her are delightful adventures in discovering the unexpected! What's unusual about it is that it's designed to be made as a text block with a decorative softcover paper slipcase—no glue is used in this binding. Just think of the endless and easy possibilities! You can create this little book (approximately 5.5 x 4.25 inches) with materials already lying around the house, and interestingly, no ruler is required. The big bonus: because the notebook is made without a ruler, it can easily be translated into any size book. Just start with the size of a cover sheet that happens to be available. What a handy technique to add to your toolkit!

For show and tell, Jeff brings in all the materials he would normally use for this class. Some are both surprising and amusing. Because the class is at Two Hands Paperie, though, standard bookbinding materials are used: waxed linen thread, bone folders, and bookbinding needles. Jeff steps you through putting your notebook together. You’ll leave class having learned a Coptic sewing technique as well as a clever way to create a decorative cover.
