Dating back centuries, its purpose was to prevent wind from blowing out the flame of a candle. This simple light source morphed into elaborate lanterns that are an integral part of annual festivals all over the world. Symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness, they’re held in the darkest months of the year.

Bring the soft, gentle glow of light into your home with an eye-catching lantern woven from paper. She’s talking about the art of creating texture by taking a rubbing – that is, placing blank paper over a raised or indented surface and rubbing it gently with a marking agent such as charcoal or chalk. Before you start thinking of kindergarten, know that rubbing is an honest-to-goodness art technique. The fancy French name for it is frottage, and it was used most famously by surrealist painter Max Ernst.

There are two styles of rubbings. One is done over “found” texture and the other is done over “created” texture. After describing both, Janet starts the class out working with found textures. Think kitchen strainers, a woven basket, a carved panel, the grain on a piece of wood, and embossed leather book covers. Anything with a hard surface will do. The process couldn’t be simpler or, as Janet points out, more fun. Once you start looking for textures, you’ll start seeing them in unexpected places! “Created” rubbings are made from a simple textured plate, either bought or handmade. Janet makes her own plates from junk mail, postcards, and the cardboard from a cereal or cracker box. So easy! She teaches you how to make your own.

Once you’re familiar with both found and created rubbings, start experimenting. Each tiny wonder – from the cleverest fox or hedgehog to a charming parade of flower-bearing young girls – is handcrafted from paper clay, wire, wood, and other tiny bits and pieces. Her sophisticated yet simple designs show the influence of both her father’s Scandinavian heritage and the intricate painted miniatures she collected when living in Switzerland. Her affinity for using small, ordinary objects comes from her mom, also a graphic designer and artist. She taught Jone that you can make just about anything you want instead of going to a store to buy it. Jone’s creative life started on the floor of her father’s studio, where she sat as a child surrounded by brushes, paints, and a treasure of paper. Her passion for design eventually led to work developing store displays, award-winning lines of decorated papers, and the beloved Bryce and Madeline stickers. One day, after twenty years of licensing her artwork for other people’s products, Jone realized that she needed to get back to basics and simplify. In that moment, her tiny little world was born. Now she spends her time teaching, drawing, painting, and making huge messes on every available flat surface.
