The bonus? It enriches the experience a hundredfold. Doing it requires only a blank journal and a few art supplies tucked away in a small case – nothing fancy! And you don’t have to be an “artist”. Just willing to carve out a little time here and there to quietly write, paste, and draw.

Learn this simple approach to travel journaling from Fran Meneley, a veteran traveler and a prolific journaler. Her experience is that journaling helps us step outside of ourselves and makes us more attuned to what’s going on all around us. We notice the smell of a dusty road, how good a coke can taste far away from home, and the expressions on people’s faces while waiting for a train. These small details are the soul of the journey and become precious memories when recorded.

Fran shares with you what she’s learned from years of creating her own travel journals. Each tiny wonder – from the cleverest fox or hedgehog to a charming parade of flower-bearing young girls – is handcrafted from paper clay, wire, wood, and other tiny bits and pieces. Her sophisticated yet simple designs show the influence of both her father’s Scandinavian heritage and the intricate painted miniatures she collected when living in Switzerland. Her affinity for using small, ordinary objects comes from her mom, also a graphic designer and artist. She taught Jone that you can make just about anything you want instead of going to a store to buy it. Jone’s creative life started on the floor of her father’s studio, where she sat as a child surrounded by brushes, paints, and a treasure of paper. Her passion for design eventually led to work developing store displays, award-winning lines of decorated papers, and the beloved Bryce and Madeline stickers. One day, after twenty years of licensing her artwork for other people’s products, Jone realized that she needed to get back to basics and simplify. In that moment, her tiny little world was born. Now she spends her time teaching, drawing, painting, and making huge messes on every available flat surface. She’s talking about the art of creating texture by taking a rubbing – that is, placing blank paper over a raised or indented surface and rubbing it gently with a marking agent such as charcoal or chalk. Before you start thinking of kindergarten, know that rubbing is an honest-to-goodness art technique. The fancy French name for it is frottage, and it was used most famously by surrealist painter Max Ernst.

There are two styles of rubbings. One is done over “found” texture and the other is done over “created” texture. After describing both, Janet starts the class out working with found textures. Think kitchen strainers, a woven basket, a carved panel, the grain on a piece of wood, and embossed leather book covers. Anything with a hard surface will do. The process couldn’t be simpler or, as Janet points out, more fun. Once you start looking for textures, you’ll start seeing them in unexpected places! “Created” rubbings are made from a simple textured plate, either bought or handmade. Internationally, her murals can be seen in São Luís, Brazil, and in Barcelona, Spain. Nationally, they appear in Denver, Colorado, and in both Tuscaloosa and Birmingham, Alabama. The underlying theme is always history. For example, her River City Mural in Tuscaloosa draws upon images and illustrations from vintage books on Alabama to show how the relationship between the Black Warrior River and various groups of inhabitants has changed over time. Her objective? To have viewers think about the river in new ways.

Teresa is active in the international collage community, and was awarded the Doug & Laurie Kanyer Art Collection Purchase Award in 2019 at Kolaj Fest New Orleans. The Kanyers established their collection to support artists and advance a deeper understanding of collage as art. Their criteria for choosing the winners were the overall practice of the artist, the historical value/critical context of the work, and how the work demonstrates a use of the medium. The Kanyers also considered the artist’s broader role in collage to identify artists whose impact goes beyond their immediate community.
