Local artist Fran Meneley, who has years of experience putting images together brilliantly, has an approach to the art of collage that’s both intuitive and well-grounded in specific techniques. She starts the class with a few warm up exercises, with everyone receiving the same materials at the beginning of each exercise. The results are eye-opening, instructive, and inspiring. It’s amazing to see how each person’s natural approach produces such a wide variety of small collages.

Additional exercises are fast-paced and keep you working from the right side of your brain. Focus on the scraps you love, then sort through and organize them. They’re the raw material for tapping into your intuitive sense of color. During class, use the color wheel to analyze their characteristics – hue, shade, tint, tone, complementary, analogous, cool, warm – and where your scraps fit in. One result of all the exercises is a unique and personal color booklet for you to use in future creative projects.

Toward the end of class, create a personal color “map” using your paper scraps. She loves to explore different media and will attempt to make art out of nearly anything. Mia demonstrates how these diverse materials—from found papers to specialty surfaces—can be layered and combined to strengthen your artistic voice.
